Biggest issue I have with the ARod news

February 9th, 2009

When I was at a major division I college, we tested all of our football players (along with the other sports) for illegal drugs (mostly street drugs). I was a part of the collection process and was an established part of the chain of command. There were a few people higher up who knew the names and when they were going to be tested and thankfully as far as I know no one ever skirted around the rules. Our football players also had random testing for steroids, testosterone, etc. Again I was part of the chain of command and these samples were then sent out to a lab very similar to the one MLB uses.

The fact that Orza allegedly warned ARod of an upcoming PED test in 2004 is just mind boggling to me. I haven’t heard enough about this yet in the main street media, so I’ll use my time here to note what I have an issue with.

  1. How did Orza know which player would get tested when?
  2. Did he only know when ARod would be tested or did he know when everyone would be tested?
  3. Did he only warn ARod or did he warn everyone he knew about?
  4. How can the rest of the union members not demand new leadership if Orza actually did what he was accused of?
  5. Again, how the hell did Orza know who was going to get tested when.
  6. The fact that Orza kept the tests, hoping to create enough false positives to never have testing again, shows how much of a culture it was.

How can anyone take the player’s union seriously (or MLB for that matter) when they say they tried to get the game clean?

Part of me wants the list of names to come out and then have Sen. Mitchell be able to come out and give a true report. I want Sen. Mitchell and Bud Selig to give “immunity” to any player, official, team representative, etc. who would cooperate.

I’m not naive enough to think that people aren’t using PEDs now. It has advanced beyond the simple ones. Designer drugs will always be in front of the authorities, no matter what anyone says. If for some reason, the chemists somehow run out of things to create, they’ll move on to something else. What baseball people need to understand and implement is having the right people at the right levels of management and the union.
