Position Scarcity – Is it fantasy baseball Fools Gold??

January 22nd, 2009

So what else would I do on my commute was start to think about what I was going to do in my upcoming draft at the end of March with other writers from Rotosavants.com.  Of course I started to think about specific players that I could pick up at my number 9 slot out of twelve, but it quickly (somehow) turned to whether or not drafting based on position scarcity is a good idea.

I used to think it was a good idea but I’ve come to realize after several years that this isn’t so.  I’m sure many of you have heard the so called “experts” say that because the gap at catcher is so great you should draft Russell Martin in the 4th round sandwiched around Hamels and Peavy.  This is usually ahead of Adam Dunn, Roy Halladay, and McCann. This is several rounds ahead of Soto.

This is where my problem with position scarcity, I say turn’s into fantasy baseball’s Fool’s Gold.  From far away it appears to be legitimate. It appears real.  Everything looks great.  You get a piece of it and feel good.  When you try to cash it in though, your world falls apart.  As an example, say you drafted Martin in the 4th round and after 1.5 months decide you need power.  How many general managers would trade a catcher with this line versus Dunn’s line.

New Year – New Fantasy Baseball Tools

January 19th, 2009

After a very long fall and winter so far (planning a wedding at the same time), I’ve gotten my Injury Tracking Tool live.  You can find it here. It’s extremely simple to use, all you need is the player’s first and last name and you will get their DL transaction history back to 2001.

That however isn’t where I plan on stopping.  This injury tool is going to help all fantasy baseball fans and general baseball fans alike.  You will also be able to quickly get the number of days and number of times on the DL for the last 3, 5, and all years back to 2001.

In the coming weeks, I will be adding additional formatting to make browsing through the players easier. Finally I will soon provide new information in the tables (including day-to-day injuries, off-season injuries, and eventually minor league injuries).  So I hope you enjoy it, use it as much as you want when doing research/trade ideas, and come back again soon.

Long time…

January 19th, 2009

Ok so I know it’s been a really long time but it’s for a good reason.  I will have my Disabled List tool live starting tonight for everyone to enjoy.   My Pitch Fx Tool is taking much longer than I have anticipated so hopefully I will be getting that up and running soon.  One note however, is that I will be going out of town starting Friday to go on my Honeymoon. I won’t be back until the first week of February, so you definitely won’t see any posts from me then.
