Well we finally have an explanation of what is causing Joe Mauer’s pain and discomfort. Through two different MDs and specialists, he was diagnosed with SI joint inflammation but there are still doubts (including myself and Mauer) that he’ll be ready for Opening Day.
Catching isn’t necessarily an issue for him but running is what is causing him the most pain and irritation. He’s going to be treated with a stronger anti-inflammatory which hopefully will knock it down.
If you feel the two small bones in your low back towards your hips, that’s there the SI joints are. When you hear someone “threw out their back” this is typically where it occurs. It is an extremely painful condition initially and can really limit your activity when it is flared up. SI joints are stressed with hip/low back rotation and running.

Injury News, Joe Mauer, SI Joint
Mauer is still suffering effects from the surgery to remove a kidney obstruction he’s had since birth on January 2nd. He has yet to play in a spring training game due to the persistent back pain and therefore is nowhere near game shape ready. He’s due to undergo a MRI arthrogram where they inject a radioactive dye into the vessels to get a better picture in his case of the flow in the kidneys.
While it’s not time to completely start worrying, I say I’d monitor it quite closely. Any further setback means Opening Day is in jeopardy which would move up a few hitters in front of him in my eyes. If he misses even 20 games, that’s close to 100 ABs and whose to say he doesn’t get hurt in other areas.
The fact that worries me somewhat is that they (the medical staff) doesn’t know what is causing the pain. Most likely this isn’t a common procedure among MLB players and therefore they don’t have experience in treating it. It could end up that the surgery failed or that scar tissue has built up and is effecting the nerves in the area.
